THE HALF ROOM
Philippe Cousin
I've spoken to you several times about Kerry singer Pauline Scanlon, about her solo albums and her duo with Eilis Kennedy in Lumiere. She's back in 2025, but this time as part of a quartet, The Half Room.
The Half Room began as a group of friends who shared a passion for traditional Irish song. Then, little by little, they formed a band. All four of them sing. They are seasoned artists. As well as Pauline, the group includes singer Nicola Joyce, also a member of the Galway trio The Whileaways. Two singers complete the quartet, Eoin Wynne and Fabian Joyce, who accompany their colleagues on guitar and banjo. They are backed up from time to time by Alex Borwick on keyboards, electric guitar and even, very discreetly, saxophone.
This is their eponymous debut album, on which they take turns singing on all 10 tracks, either solo or in harmony. With discreet arrangements and subtle accompaniment, The Half Room are folk music at its best. Performing songs in canon, while drawing inspiration from Irish and American traditions, their first opus is a little gem of sensitivity and delicacy. Moving from the battlefields of Belgium (Will you go to Flanders) to America (My love is in America) and the stormy seas of Portugal (Lisbon), the four singers distil pastel colours and harmonic textures, while their new album is a delicate, sensitive gem. Moving from the battlefields of Belgium (Will you go to Flanders) to America (My love is in America) and the stormy seas of Portugal (Lisbon), the four singers distil pastel colours and harmonic textures, while their songs linger on stories charged with feeling. Offering the listener an incredible variety of harmonies and emotions.
From start to finish, the album is all calm and beauty. A real success.
