TARA BREEN - PÁDRAIG RYNNE - JIM MURRAY

Odyssey

Philippe Cousin

Pádraig Rynne, an unrivalled talent, is recognised as one of Ireland's finest concertinists and is a prolific musician in terms of compositions and albums. I've presented his recent albums here, both under his own name and with the group Notify, which he helped to create.

This time he's back with the trio formed with violinist Tara Breen and guitarist Jim Murray. After the excellent Nasc, they are back with an equally superb new album, Odyssey. The three of them take us on a fantastic odyssey that will take us from County Clare, their region of origin, on Mount levers and Malbay slide, both written by Pádraig, to other Irish regions such as Kerry with Begley's, and County Cork with Finbarr Dwyer's. Scotland with The room is in darkness written by Oban fiddler Aidan O'Rourke, Asturias with the slow dance Palmira composed by Fernando Largo, one of the fathers of Asturian folk, and Denmark with the waltz Vals til mor og far.

An Odyssey carried by three talented musicians who transform sometimes ancient melodies into lively, dynamic and irresistibly infectious music. Witness Music on the wind, which opens the album, or High5's, penned by Jim Murray, which closes it.
Pádraig's ornamentation is so abundant that the music can be complex, but it's effortless to listen to. Wonder, joy and elation are just some of the words that spontaneously spring to mind when listening to this excellent album. Surely one of the best albums of the year.
