SOCKS IN THE FRYING PAN

Waiting for Inspiration

Philippe Cousin

After three studio albums and a live one in 2019, traditional Irish troublemakers Socks in the Frying Pan are back with a fifth album, Waiting for Inspiration.

It's been almost ten years since their last studio album. Yet they have not been idle in all these years, touring all over the world and particularly in the USA, where they have visited 46 states, collecting numerous awards along the way: best live band or album of the year.

And when inspiration finally returned, they concocted the fresh, energetic album we have here. Like their previous albums, the cover photo flirts with the politically correct, as seriousness in terms of image is not their forte. However, the eleven tracks on the album are as elaborate as it gets. The Socks play a mix of traditionally inspired tunes and more singer-songwriter-influenced music.
The three friends hail from Ennis in County Clare, a region renowned for the quality and petulance of its music. And the new album reflects this. In the fifteen years of their existence, the band members have matured, and while their music is still exuberant, their style has become more refined and their sound richer. Dare I use an overused expression when I say that this album is one of maturity.
Eleven tracks, six instrumentals and five songs carried by the warm voice of Aodán Coyne. Alongside him, the Hayes brothers, Shane on accordion and Fiachra on fiddle, don't just make up the numbers, developing their own energetic playing. And to support them, a few friends including the Sockettes choir (Lee, Nicole, Willy and Anne), as well as John Bridge on bass and Mike Shimmin on percussion.
All in all, some forty minutes of pure energy.
