SHERIDAN RÚITIN
Freakshow
Philippe Cousin
This is a prolific band, as less than a year after their previous album, they are back with a new release. Sheridan Rúitin, a band formed in a garage in the suburbs of New York in the spring of 2020, at the height of the Covid pandemic, is back with Freakshow.
Like their previous album, this latest release skilfully blends traditional Irish music – as the band members are descendants of Irish migrants – with the folk and rock influences characteristic of North American music. Combining tradition and musical audacity, their new album is reminiscent of the Irish west coast, like the roar of the wind on the Cliffs of Moher.
Blending Irish song storytelling with the energy of American pop and rock, Sheridan Rúitin has created a sound all its own, which the band describes as Celtwave: Celtic roots with an American twist. The album features a few Irish classics, such as Ye Ragg, which opens the album, Red Haired Mary, Wild Rover and The Auld Triangle, but they have been given a wild and raw treatment by the five members of the band.
The instrumentation is rich and varied. Flutes and uilleann pipes wail alongside banjo and guitar strings and accordion buttons.
But their repertoire cannot be reduced to traditional tunes revisited, as several tracks are the band's own compositions: Wyld Nite, Fitzpatrick's Mourning, Freakshow and Old Man Mickey. Each piece vibrates to the sound of fiddles, guitars and lively rhythms. It's generous and devilishly energetic music.
