SEÁNIE Ó'LOINGSIGH

Chongie Road

Philippe Cousin

A little less traditional, though, comes Chongie Road from uilleann piper Seánie Ó'Loingsigh (Seán Lynch in the English version).

He was born and raised on Achill Island, a mainland island in County Mayo on the west coast. Seánie grew up in a family deeply involved in traditional music. He was rocked by the melodious sounds of traditional music.

He was introduced to music at an early age. First came the tin whistle, like all Irish children. Then it was the uilleann pipes that caught his fancy. His training was provided by John McNamara, who had a decisive influence on the young boy.
Chongie Road is his first record, a hypnotic, introspective album. Seánie embarks on a remarkable musical journey that sums up the different stages of his life and career. Each of the eleven tracks is a reflection on the moments, experiences and influences that have accompanied him in his life.

Over the course of the album, listeners are taken on a musical odyssey, with each track corresponding to a period in Seánie's life. The album opens with The Big House, a rousing jig, before giving way to a series of reels including Trim the Velvet and The Road to Lisdoonvarna. A little further on, the sound of the ocean accompanies the nostalgic Valentia Harbour.
A suite of Off the Cuff reels takes over, taking us on a wild ride to the rhythm of a wild bodhrán. We recognise the tunes The Wind that Shakes the Barley and Rainy Day.
This is followed by a number of frenzied jigs and reels, including O'Connors, Wandering Minstrel and Nine Pint Coggie, before the album closes with a calmer melody, Chongie Road, which gives the album its title. It features a poignant poem written by Bríd McLoughlin, underlining the importance of the country, its people and family life, and their profound influence on Seánie.
A number of musicians contribute to the album, giving Seánie a great deal of support. They include fiddle, guitar, double bass and percussion.
Chongie Road is more than an ordinary album. It's a heartfelt account of the artist's musical life, a kind of testament that stirs the soul. A truly original album that's well worth discovering.
