PÁDRAIG McGOVERN & SABINA McCAGUE

Pádraig is originally from Ballymagovern, on the border between the counties of Cavan and Leitrim, and has been living in Monaghan for ten years. He was trained on the uilleann pipes by the renowned Cavan piper, P.J. Flood. He has performed and recorded alongside renowned artists such as Peter Carberry, Ryan Molloy, John Carty, Dónal Lunny, Lúnasa, Dervish and Téada. His discography is extensive, including, amongst others, the two albums by the group Garadice.

Sabina McCague, meanwhile, is a native of County Monaghan. She is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist who is equally adept at playing the harp and the fiddle. Introduced to traditional music at a very early age by her grandfather, she also studied under the piper Eamon Curran and holds a bachelor’s degree in music.
This excellent album they have just released is a collection of tracks reflecting their love of traditional Irish music, as well as the various experiences that have shaped their shared journey as musicians and as a couple.

The 28 tunes on the album, grouped into twelve tracks, were learnt during sessions, taken from recordings they particularly enjoy, or drawn from the archives of Irish music. The composers of all these tunes – jigs, hornpipes, highland jigs, reels and slip jigs - include Paddy O’Donoghue, Richard Dwyer, Paddy O’Brien, Ed Reavy, Dónal Lunny, Neillidh Mulligan… and Pádraig himself, who composed four of them.
To support them in their work, they called upon three excellent musicians: John McCartin (guitar), Seán Óg Graham (bouzouki and guitar) and Ryan Molloy (piano).
This is an album by two musicians whose lives and music are closely intertwined, demonstrating musical maturity through and through. A traditional album from start to finish and one of great beauty.
