OISÍN Mac DIARMADA - DAITHÍ GORMLEY - SAMANTHA HARVEY
Lane To The Glen
Philippe Cousin
Known as the founder and leader of the group Téada, Oisín Mac Diarmada is a brilliant fiddler from the Sligo region of north-west Ireland. In 2016 he brought us a charming album in the company of pianist Samantha Harvey.
Eight years on, they're back at it again, this time with accordionist Daithí Gormley, also from County Sligo. If you like traditional music, you're in for a treat. No electric instruments or rock rhythms here. Just trad. A classic combination of fiddle, accordion and piano - not a particularly traditional instrument, but one that has earned its place in traditional Irish music since Seán Ó Riada opened the way for it in the 1960s.
Lane To The Glen is therefore an essential collection for aficionados of traditional music, particularly from Sligo and the surrounding area. Oisín has always been devoted to the music of this region, and in particular to the musicians of its golden age, represented by such masters as James Morrison, Michael Coleman and Paddy Killoran in the 20s and 30s.
On the thirteen tracks on this album, jigs and reels reign supreme, leaving only a small space for a set of hornpipes and a set of barndances. Throughout the tracks, you'll find compositions by the great musicians Charlie Lennon, Ed Reavy, Séamus Connolly, Josie McDermott, Paddy O'Brien, Paddy Kelly... and many others.
Oisín and Daithí have been immersed in the music of Sligo since they were very young, and they collaborated on the publication of a book containing transcriptions of the region's tunes and songs. So they knew where to draw from to compose the repertoire they present to us on this anthology album.
