Airneán
Philippe Cousin
Pádraig Rynne is unquestionably one of the finest concertinists on the traditional Irish scene, where he has been performing for over twenty years.
Over these two decades, he has released numerous albums, both under his own name and as a member of the various bands he helped create: Guidewires, Triad, Irish Concertina Ensemble, Atlantic Arc, in duet with Tara Breen or Notify, which is the subject of this article. A wide range of bands that I've had the opportunity to introduce to you on many occasions.
Notify have just released Airneán, their first album in eight years and only their third opus. Airneán is a Gaelic word meaning "nocturnal visit" and by extension "staying up late for pleasure".
Although heavily influenced by tradition, Notify's music is resolutely avant-garde. The group seamlessly blends a deep knowledge of and respect for musical tradition with an innovative edge. This six-piece band, drawn from both traditional and jazz backgrounds, has struck a balance that holds the attention of listeners from all parts of the world.
An eight-track album featuring the band members - Pádraig Rynne on concertina, Tara Breen on fiddle, Davie Ryan on percussion, Adam Taylor on bass, Rory McCarthy on keyboards and Hugh Dillon on electric guitar - as well as a number of special guests: sean-nós singers Niall McCabe, Séamus and Caoimhe Uí Fhlatharta, piper Tyler Duncan and pianist Alex Borwick.
Eight tracks mostly composed by the band members, interspersed with three traditional songs, Tá mé i mo shuí, A chomaraigh Aoibhinn Ó and An raibh tú ar an gCarraig. From the very first track, Other Side of the Glass, it's clear that we're in for something special. Pádraig's concertina takes center stage, supported by the other instruments of his little comrades weaving a muical lace that wraps itself almost hypnotically around motifs imbued with contemporary compositions and traditional themes. The Grene composed by H. Dillon is superb, a delicate guitar melody that holds the listener in its orbit.
A rich, captivating album that ends with a melancholy traditional song that provides a peaceful respite from this inspired music.
