NÍALL HANNA

The Roving Journeyman

Philippe Cousin

Born in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, Níall Hanna, like many others, was immersed in traditional singing from an early age, learning a whole repertoire from his grandfather Geordie.

He is a singer and songwriter who won his first Ulster singing championship at the age of 13. While still at school, he took to the stage with his brother Ciarán and two friends, forming the group Reel It In. During his studies in Belfast, he met many musicians in traditional music sessions: Dónal O'Connor, Damian McKee and Liam Bradley, both from the band Beoga.

At the end of 2017 he released his debut album Autumn Winds to unanimous critical acclaim, with Níall receiving the title of Best Emerging Folk Artist the same year.
Seven years later, he released his long-awaited second solo album, The Roving Journeyman. It featured five songs written by Níall and six traditional ballads. As well as Níall's own arrangements on guitar and bouzouki, the eleven tracks on this excellent album are accompanied by Ciarán Hanna on whistles and concertina, Rachel McGarrity on fiddle and vocals, Damian McKee on accordion, Liam Bradley on keyboards and Chris McGlone on bodhrán.

The songs written by Níall are inspired by local stories, but also by love, work or war, all showing real songwriting ability.
They include the ballads The Roving Journeyman, As I Roved Out, The Banks of the Lee and The Wee Weaver. The delicate sound of the nylon strings of his guitar really come into their own, while Níall's voice is warm and expressive, full of nuance and sensitivity.
It's easy to get carried away by this anthology of songs, which we're tempted to say lasts just 46 minutes.
