MOHER

When Horses Fly

Philippe Cousin

The Rennes scene is alive and well, and Irish music is particularly well represented with bands such as Poppy Seeds, Green Lads, Céilí Killers and, of course, Moher.

As a reminder, Moher consists of Corentin Quimbert on guitar, Antoine Pihier on whistles and flute, Konan Goré on fiddle and Anthony Debray on percussion. After a very promising debut album in 2023, the members of Moher are back with a second opus, When Horses Fly, which is at least as successful as the first. Reels, jigs and slides are very much in evidence.

One set is the work of Corentin, The Breton Wolf Jigs / Lorient, a tune undoubtedly inspired by the concert they gave at the FIL in 2024. It was a concert during which the four members of the band displayed boundless energy. I know, because I was there.
As the musicians of Moher claim to be influenced by famous bands such as Flook, Lúnasa and Solas, it is only natural to hear tunes inspired by them. The Road to Ringussoon or The Rossa Reel / The Stride / The Mason's Men for Solas.  Or Lady Mondagreen / The Baker by fiddler Fergal Scahill. As well as O'Rourke's Reel by Dé Dannan or The Cape Breton Fiddlers Welcome to Shetlands by Vinnie Kilduff, an Irish multi-instrumentalist known for his work with U2, The Waterboys, Clannad and Sinéad O'Connor.

Although most of the tracks are Irish-inspired, there is also a forró, a traditional dance from north-eastern Brazil, called Feira de Mangalo. There is also On the Bodhrán Side, on which Anthony's bodhrán treats us to a solo that is quite far removed from tradition. The other two members of the band, Konan and Antoine, are not to be outdone, as they also contribute to some of the tracks.
The band's four regular musicians are joined by Brian Morrissey on banjo and Silvère Vauléon on accordion.
Energy, power, passion and talent are just some of the adjectives that describe this band. If by chance they are playing near you, don't miss them.
