MAGGIE MacINNES
Uiseagan Bharraigh - Barra Skylarks
Philippe Cousin
Maggie MacInnes is a Scottish singer and harpist originally from Glasgow, but descended from a long line of singers from the island of Barra in the Outer Hebrides
It is therefore only natural that she performs songs passed down through her family, particularly those of her mother, the famous traditional singer Flora MacNeill (1928–2015). Maggie was one of the very first to be awarded the title of Gaelic Singer of the Year. She has also been a member of several groups over the years and has travelled extensively around the world, sharing her music and songs far and wide. She has also composed the music for several documentaries broadcast on BBC Scotland.
Since the release of her first album in 1998, she has recorded several more albums – nearly ten in total. Her latest, 'Uiseagan Bharraigh' (The Larks of Barra), comprises 12 tracks, all drawn from recordings of her mother Flora, made between 1955 and 1961 by an Australian folklorist. Flora herself had inherited these songs from her own mother, her grandmother and women within her family circle.
This album features many songs that Flora made famous, as well as a few rarely heard gems that Maggie is delighted and proud to share with as wide an audience as possible.
She has chosen these twelve songs for their beauty and has introduced some innovative arrangements. The album features waulking songs – a very popular form of song in the Outer Hebrides – such as ‘Bha mi raoir a’ gabhail d’ fhradhairc’, ‘A Mhic Iain ‘ic Eòghainn Bhàin’ and ‘Trom hò ro nàilibh’. It also includes a few laments: ‘Hì iùraibh i hoireann’ and ‘Cumha Hiortach’.
Maggie has brought together a group of talented musicians, including her son Calum Park (guitar, fiddle and vocals), Dan Brown (keyboards and vocals), Robyn Gray (vocals), Ailis Sutherland (flute, tin whistle and vocals), Wendy Weatherby (vocals) and Alex Palmer (percussion and vocals).
Songs performed with emotion and sensitivity. Yet another resounding success.
