KONOZ

Philippe Cousin

Konogan an Habask is well known in Breton cultural circles, having been immersed in them from a very young age, just like the rest of his siblings, for that matter. At the age of six, he began learning the bombarde at the Quimper music school.

As a teenager, he also took an interest in the biniou, teaching himself to play the instrument. He gradually began playing the biniou with the group Startijenn, which he helped to found in 1997 with friends from Diwan secondary school. A few years later, he was at Diwan High School in Carhaix and learnt the uilleann pipes at the town’s music school under the renowned piper Patrick Molard.
At the same time, he played with Bagad Kemper and formed a duo specialising in the music of southern Cornouaille with his friend Youenn Chapalain, who also played with Bagad Kemper. They went on to win numerous awards, notably securing three runner-up spots in the Brittany championships.
A few years later, Konogan became a professional musician and released his first solo album, 'D'ar Pevarlamm', which enjoyed some success. In the meantime, having left Startijenn to devote himself to his new band Pevarlamm, he performed all over the place, notably in Scotland at the Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow. At the end of 2015, Pevarlamm’s second album, 'Deltu', was released, once again to critical acclaim.
After playing with several groups, including Bagad Bro-Konk-Kerne, Bagad Cap Caval, the Celtic circle Ar Vro Vigoudenn and David Pasquet’s band, he formed the group Konoz in 2021 alongside Guillaume Le Bourc’h on bass, Thomas Simon on accordion and Nicolas Kervazo on guitar. Together they perform on numerous stages across Brittany, at fest-noz events and festivals.
Finally, in early 2026, Konogan and his bandmates treat us to a magnificent album, simply titled 'Konoz', which brings their work as a group to fruition.
But Konogan is not content merely to be a virtuoso musician; he has composed all 11 tracks that flow seamlessly across this elegant album, supported, of course, by the other band members on the arrangements. We can hear traditional Breton dances such as the plinn, gavotte, an dro, hanter-dro, Scottish and rond Sant-Visant. But in the Konoz style, that is to say, lively and energetic.
Konoz offers an eclectic and vibrant repertoire in which the instruments and the various influences that have shaped the four musicians of the group intertwine.
They themselves describe their music in terms of “raw energy, trance and modern beats, with every track inviting you to dance and feel the emotion”. For them, it is “an intense musical experience, full of movement and freedom”.
An excellent album from a young musician who is no less talented. A real success.
