HARALD JUENGST
Handpan Music to soothe the Soul
Philippe Cousin
Harald Juengst is a German percussionist originally from Duisburg, but who has lived part of the year in Donegal in the north-west of Ireland for the past 50 years.
A teacher as well as a music journalist, TV scriptwriter, songwriter and musician in the bands Sheevón and Fior Uisce, it was in 2016 that he discovered the metallic, harmonic, warm and relaxing sound of the handpan, an instrument that originated in Switzerland in the late 1990s. The instrument is made from two metal domes pressed one on top of the other.
In just a quarter of a century, the handpan has become a key instrument in musical relaxation. This is an instrument that produces an enchanting sound thanks to a wide range of notes, a melodious and original sound.
So Harald began to develop his own sound universe on the handpan, using structured chord accompaniment and intuitive improvisation.
He has now released an album devoted entirely to the handpan, with the help of Irish musician Eamon Mc Elholm (Stockton's Wing, Solas), who plays piano and guitar while producing the album.
The title of this one, Handpan Music to soothe the Soul, is a programme in itself. Harald plays a handpan in C-sharp with nine strongly reverberated sound fields. A special handpan that transmits gentle, relaxing sounds to the heart and ears, an overwhelming sound that escapes time and space, soothing, calming and comforting.
And to complete the package, H. Juengst also plays a KoMo, an instrument derived from a 13-string Japanese koto. Throughout the ten tracks of this album, you will discover a relaxing calm and achieve absolute serenity.
