GERARD FAHY
and The Wild Atlantic Orchestra
Philippe Cousin
Born in East Galway, Gerard Fahy was deeply influenced by the beauty of his native region and the power of the Atlantic Ocean that bathes Ireland's west coast.
As a member of a family deeply involved in music, he received an education from both close family and renowned musicians. He excels on uilleann pipes and whistles, and has collected a number of All-Ireland titles.
G. Fahy is a talented composer and is often cited as one of the most accomplished musicians in Irish traditional music. In fact, he collaborated with dancer and musician Michael Flatley to compose the soundtrack for the show Lord of the Dance.
His work with the best traditional musicians, and his collaboration with the Macedonia Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Sofia Radio Orchestra in Bulgaria, has resulted in an absolutely fantastic album. This album with The Wild Atlantic Orchestra was inspired by the death of his mother in 2016, which prompted him to compose and dedicate a piece to her, Bridie's Road home, which is featured on the album. Introduced by the orchestra's violins, this track sets the stage for Gerard's emotional uilleann pipes.
Twelve of the thirteen tracks on the album are original compositions by Gerard, with the exception of the traditional My Lagan Love. This collection of tunes is characterized by a variety of styles and electric influences that sometimes sound very pop. The album's collaborators include violinist Máirín Fahy, a member of this prestigious family. The album also features a number of songs sung by Chloe Agnew, Sibéal Ní Chaisaide and Paula Gilmer. The latter sings My Lagan Love, on which we can't help but think of Sinéad O'Connor.
G. Fahy offers us a rich, brilliant album reminiscent of Shaun Davey's orchestral suites.
