GAVIN MARWICK

GAVIN MARWICK & AARON JONES - GAVIN MARWICK & WENDY STEWART - GAVIN MARWICK & RUTH MORRIS - GAVIN MARWICK & PHIL ALEXANDER

Philippe Cousin

Gavin Marwick is a fiddler and composer, a familiar face on the Scottish trad scene, who has performed all over the world with the many bands he has been a part of over the years: Firelight Trio, Journeyman or Iron Horse, which had its moment of glory in the 90s with seven albums to its credit.

The youngest of a large family, he grew up in a home where music and dance were a daily practice. He was taught by some of Scotland's most famous fiddlers, who gave him a wide-ranging education in the various regional styles. As he travelled the world, he found that he was increasingly influenced and inspired by other cultures.
Gavin has just completed a major project, Quaterdays, a series of four EPs (6 tracks) of original compositions, a musical response to the tradition and cultural history of the ancient seasons. To achieve this, he has enlisted the services of four fellow travelers: Aaron Jones (cittern) on Candlemas, harpist Wendy Stewart on Whitsun, Ruth Morris (nickelharp) on Lammas (harvest) and accordionist Phil Alexander on Martinmas (St. Martin's Day).

Characterized by contemporary tunes, all of which he has composed and transmitted in a traditional ambience, this is an original and exciting project. The four EPs were released in the course of 2023, and were the subject of a boxed set a few months ago.
Chandeleur ushers in the end of winter and thoughts of spring to come. Aaron Jones' cittern accompanies the fiddle to perfection in a series of jigs and reels that mark the end of winter. Pentecost marks the beginning of summer, and the promise of warmer days to come is rendered by the fiddle and harp duet. Lammas emphasizes the harvest, a time of generosity and joy thanks to the fiddle/nickelharp duo. Finally, Martinmas marks the end of the year with P. Alexander's accordion and piano, a fiery blend of Hungarian and French influences.
This musical series is an absolute delight, containing a splendid selection of Scottish dances (reels, jigs, strathspeys) to keep us whirling throughout the year.
