FIONA TYNDALL

Éinín an Cheóil - Birdsong

Philippe Cousin

I introduced you to Fiona Tyndall a few years ago when her album New Frontiers was released.

Now she's back with a more complete album, Éinín an Cheóil - Birdsong. Originally from County Clare, Fiona divides her time between the United States, where she has lived for several years, and Ireland, where she returns as often as possible. Her father, Buadhach Tóibin, was a famous traditional singer and also a great collector. He meticulously transcribed more than 200 traditional Irish songs by hand in a large bound book, which Fiona inherited when he died. It is from this book that she drew most of the 12 songs on her new album. It is therefore a family legacy, presented as a tribute to her father. But Fiona also shares it with her own daughters, Aisling and Caoimhe, who accompany her on some of the tracks.  One such track is the title song, Éinín an Cheóil. Fiona remembers her father singing it to her, and now it is her daughters' turn to join her.

Several well-known songs are also featured: Fear a Bháta combines instruments such as guitar, fiddle, keyboards and bass with Fiona's warm, expressive voice. You can even hear the gentle murmur of water, as Fear a Bháta means “the boatman”. There are also some familiar tunes: An Mhaighdean Mhara (The Mermaid) and Oró Mó Bhaidín (My Little Boat), with rich but never overbearing arrangements that always complement Fiona's voice.
Several tracks are performed solo by F. Tyndall, discreetly accompanied by Brendan Hayes on keyboards and guitar, who is also the true conductor of the album, which he produced. The album concludes with Gabhaim Molta Bríde, a tune popularised by Eithne Ní Uallacháin of the band Lá Lugh and more recently by Altan on their latest album.
Apart from Brendan Hayes, many musicians contributed to the album: Fergal Scahill (mandolin, fiddle...), Kieran Munnelly (flutes), Seán Whelan (guitar), Tim Edey (guitar, accordion), Pádraig Rynne (concertina), Maire Egan (fiddle) and James Blennerhassett (bass).
A very personal album presented by a highly talented singer.
