FILKIN'S DRIFT
Glan
Philippe Cousin
In the autumn of 2023, Chris Roberts, guitarist and singer, and Seth Bye, fiddler, set off on a walk along the coastal path of Wales.
A journey of 870 miles, during which they played a concert almost every night. The result was their debut album Glan. Glan, whose Welsh title means bright, clear, skilfully combines tunes and songs collected during their walk with new compositions inspired by the beautiful landscapes they saw every day and the music of their native Wales and Gloucestershire.
Chris and Seth's diverse musical influences combine to create a truly unique fiddle and guitar sound, over which they lay their voices from afar, on traditional Welsh songs. These include Adar Mân y Mynydd, or Hiraeth, one of the most popular songs in the Welsh repertoire. But also Bugeilio'r Gwenith Gwyn, a timeless love story, popularized many years ago by the best-known Welsh singer Dafydd Iwan.
From the utterly original sounds of Chris's guitar on Craig y Ddinas to the polyrhythm of Bugeilio'r Gwenith Gwyn, the album pushes ever further the boundaries of what their instruments can achieve. And then there are the captivating vocal harmonies, enhanced by the simplicity with which the duo develop an almost sensual charm over the Welsh lyrics. Finally, the album closes with the standard The Water is Wide, this time (and only time) sung in English.
A delicate, melodious, harmonic album.
