ENDA REILLY
Hy-Brasil
Philippe Cousin
Hy-Brasil is a mythical island situated between Ireland and the United States.
Over the centuries, many people have claimed to have spotted it, although it does not appear on any modern maps. Enda Reilly is a singer-songwriter originally from Dublin but based in Michigan, near Detroit, since 2019. This is why, with his thoughts constantly shuttling between his two homelands, he chose to name his new album – already his fifth – after this place.
His work bridges the gap between Ireland and America through narrative-rich songs and timeless ballads. Raised speaking Gaelic, a language he speaks fluently, Enda has always been steeped in Irish culture and traditional music, the foundations that have played a major role in shaping his repertoire.
With a powerful voice, expressive guitar playing and a natural gift for storytelling, Enda presents original songs inspired by Irish myths, poetry and history. In his younger days, he used to play in the streets and pubs of Dublin. Since moving to the US, he has gone on to perform on major stages and at the many Irish festivals that abound across the Atlantic.
Eleven songs follow one another here: seven in English – ‘A Sign Of Rain’, ‘Canal Bank Hangover Walk’ and ‘Whiskey Fire’ – and four in Irish – ‘Grá Mo Chroíse’, ‘Na Lochlannaigh’ and ‘Tá Mo Chroí in Éirinn’ – superb ballads on which Enda’s warm voice works wonders. Songs he has written and composed entirely on his own, with the exception of two, in collaboration with Enda Patrick Cullen and Aisling Kavanagh. A charming singer well worth discovering.
