ELOUAN LE SAUZE
Ar Mesaer
Philippe Cousin
Born in Lorient into a family from Ploërdut in the Pourlet region, Elouan Le Sauze attended the Diwan school.
He began learning the bombarde and biniou at an early age, before turning to singing during his years at university. A graduate of the Conservatoire, he now teaches singing in Pontivy. As a biniou/bombarde pair, as well as a kan-ha-diskan singer, or as a singer in various bands (Ivarh, Kreiz Breizh Akademi #9, Duo Derrien/Le Sauze...), he is a demanding performer who cultivates multiple facets of contemporary Breton music.
His first a cappella album, Ar Mesaer, showcases old Breton melodies, collected or heard and learned during his childhood from friends and family, including his grandfather.
Thirteen songs from the Pays Vannetais repertoire, collected mainly around Lorient, in the Pays Pourlet and the Pontivy region. Elouan's aim was to revive traditional local songs, some of which are very old, but all of which provide an insight into today's society. The songs cover themes as varied as life, love (Fañchon), break-ups, a societal fable (An tad moualc'h), an unpunished murder (Loeiz ar Ravalleg) and bucolic walks (Ar bugul), as well as forgiveness (Sant Koleban) and celebration (Ha pa oen me denig yaouank).
Like a shepherd watching over his flock, the meaning of the Breton word mersaer, Elouan Le Sauze plays the role of the singer watching over traditional songs. With his expressive voice, Elouan's intonations are sometimes reminiscent of those of his illustrious predecessor Yann-Fañch Kemener.
This is a truly authentic album that showcases a very rich repertoire and strives to preserve it.
