DANÚ - The Pearl Album

Live in Celebration

Philippe Cousin

The band Danú was formed in 1995 after a group of musicians got together to play at the Festival Interceltique de Lorient. Since then, their career has continued to evolve, with musicians and singers joining and leaving the band.

After releasing nine albums, in 2025 they will be celebrating thirty years on the live circuit with a double album entitled The Pearl - Live in Celebration, an album recorded live in concert over the last few years all over the world, mainly in the USA where they enjoy an extraordinary reputation, as well as in Ireland, Canada, Belgium and in Lorient during FIL in 2023. Thirty titles, like their thirty long years on stage.

For three decades, Danú have been delighting audiences with their powerful, authentic sound. A subtle blend of traditional melodies and energetic arrangements, their music combines Irish tradition with contemporary vitality.
Hailing from all the regions of Ireland, from the south (Waterford or Cork), the north (Donegal), or Dublin, the seven current members of the group enchant us with their timeless and powerful music. Throughout these two albums, they have drawn on some of their best songs, including older ones unearthed on their first albums, breathing new life into them.

They include Scartaglen/The Hunter's Purse, recorded in Lorient in August 2023, The Bright Lady/Kilfenora Jig, Murphy's Hornpipe, The Cameron Highlander, Master McGrath, Ar Maidin Inné and An Páistin Fionn.
But not all the tracks here are from previous albums. A dozen of the thirty tracks are new. The Trip To Clarina and The Flight of the Earls of Ulster, for example, are more recent and not previously recorded. Among all the tracks, the majority of which are instrumentals, we must salute their songs, magnified by Neil Ní Chróinin, who only joined the band in 2018 on the occasion of their album Ten Thousand Miles. We have the pleasure of recognising timeless songs from the Irish tradition, such as Mo Ghile Mear and The Foggy Dew.
A superb retrospective on thirty years of existence, The Pearl takes a comprehensive look at their already long career. And as there are two CDs, your pleasure will be double.
