DABILLA

The hound of Boann

Philippe Cousin

County Louth, north of Dublin, is rich in Celtic mythology. The band Dabilla hails from the town of Drogheda. Their debut album The hound of Boann is inspired by the legend of the goddess Boann and her faithful dog Dabilla.

Dabilla is a duo made up of Daragh Ó Héiligh on uilleann pipes and whistles and Oisín Dillon on guitar and vocals, who harmoniously blend Irish tradition with the vibrant pulse of electronic music. Their innovative sound has earned them critical acclaim, with the Irish Independent newspaper naming them one of the year's emerging talents.

The duo has chosen to reshape traditional music with modern innovations and arrangements. They blend folk melodies with contemporary production, creating their own signature, which they describe as Folktronic. Rooted in the Boyne Valley, their album transforms timeless stories into energetic performances that bridge past and future.

The opening track on the album is a traditional standard, The Blacksmith, popularized some fifty years ago by Andy Irvine and Planxty, and is a perfect illustration of their musical approach, with the regulators of the uilleann pipes adding a percussive style. We also recognize Mist Covered Mountains and the famous Rocky Road to Dublin in extensively revised versions.
There are also three original tracks: Memories composed by Oisín, March of Kaiser written by Daragh, featuring superb interplay between guitar and pipes, and Chasing Chances signed by the duo.
This is music where innovation and spontaneity come together to produce incredible tapestries of sound.
