CONOR MORIARTY
The First Month of Summer
Phiippe Cousin
I already told you about Conor Moriarty a few years ago, when Cordeen's album, which he was part of, was released.
Conor is one of Ireland's most talented accordionists. Originally from Kerry, he began learning the accordion at the age of 7 and by the age of 11, with his parents teaching dance, young Conor began accompanying dancers.
In 2009, he was crowned Irish Melodeon Champion at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann (the national competition) and the following year he won the coveted title of Senior Accordion Champion. He also holds a Master's degree in Irish Traditional Music from the University of Limerick.
His first solo album, released in 2012, was critically acclaimed. Conor cites the influence of illustrious accordionists such as Dermot Byrne, Benny McCarthy, Máirtín O'Connor and Jackie Daly. His music is strongly influenced by the Kerry tradition, also known as the Sliabh Luachra tradition. Polkas, jigs, reels, slides and hornpipes abound.
In 2013, Connor began working with the National Theatre of Ireland. Then in 2014, he formed the group Trí Tones alongside Tara Breen and Stephen Rooney. This was followed by numerous international tours. He is also a highly sought-after teacher who enjoys passing on his knowledge to the next generation.
This partly explains why it took him 13 years to release his second album, The First Month of Summer, recorded by his friend Benny McCarthy. Twelve tracks (and more than thirty tunes) follow one another with energy and perfect harmony.
All the Irish dances we are familiar with, including polkas and slides, characteristic of his region of origin, can be found here. Alongside Conor in bringing this musical project to fruition are Conal O'Kane on guitar, Tadhg Ó Meachair on piano, Billy Sutton on bodhrán and Déirdre Ní Mheachair on fiddle. The composers of many of the tunes are Con Cassidy, Johnny O'Leary, Maurice O'Keefe and Richie Dwyer, all leading figures in traditional music.
Throughout this elegant opus, Conor's playing is supple and airy, demonstrating that he has never broken the link between music and dance. A real success.
