CLEFS OF MOHER
Volume One and Two
Philippe Cousin
Tim Moher is a Canadian musician with Irish roots. Based in Ontario, he leads the Clefs of Moher, a musical group comprising between six and eleven musicians. The ensemble was formed in 2014 with the aim of performing at a fundraiser for multiple sclerosis.
The ensemble enjoyed performing so much, and met with such a receptive audience, that Tim Moher had the idea of extending the experience by recording an album, which came to fruition in 2020. Clefs of Moher is a subtle play on words, referring to the famous Cliffs of Moher on the west coast of Ireland.
The first album was a work that took listeners on a journey through Irish-inspired sounds, a unique Celtic jazz album. It was a harmonious blend of peaceful sounds combined with breathtaking solos, written by T. Moher and arranger and producer Rick Hutt.
The second opus, Clefs of Moher Volume Two, continues Tim's musical quest for his Irish roots, combined with R. Hutt's innovative arrangements. The album offers a Celtic atmosphere through energetic music, mixing symphonic pieces with jazzy flourishes, magnifying haunting melodies that inspire a refreshing sound.
Tim's compositions go far beyond simply cutting up traditional pieces coloured with jazz. Thanks to his initial musical training, he has written scores whose tunes draw on closely intertwined classical and jazz disciplines.
Several traditional musicians took part in the adventure: Shane Guse on fiddle and Spencer Murray on uilleann pipes, flute and whistle. As well as two singers: Michael Kelly Cavan and Shannon Kingsbury. There are numerous references to Dublin on this album - Phoenix Park, St. James Gate and Temple Bar. We also recognise McBrides, an iconic piece by the band Moving Heart. Moher is already planning to continue the adventure with a musical about Irish immigration to Canada in the 19th century.
In the meantime, discover the two volumes of Clefs of Moher. Once you've succumbed to the atmosphere, you'll no doubt listen to this beautiful musical project on repeat.
