CAS
Tonnta na Maidine
Philippe Cousin
A truly unique group, Cas is a Celtic music quartet that blends Irish tradition with contemporary arrangements and original compositions.
It is a unique group because it is made up of musicians with varied backgrounds and life stories. First among them is Sébastien Luthers, the son of a Belgian father and an English mother, born in Montpellier but whose family moved to County Leitrim in Ireland when he was just six years old. Sébastien began his musical journey with the whistle, then moved on to the fiddle, learning from Michael Clancy, nicknamed ‘the man of a thousand reels’. No small feat. Alongside him is Nicolas Contamine, a pianist and percussionist from Auvergne. Both played in the Celtic rock band Oubéret. They were joined by flutist Carol Scott and guitarist Peter Gallagher, both Irishmen from Wicklow and Westmeath. And so the journey began.
'Tonnta na Maidine' (Morning Waves) is their debut album. It features fourteen tracks, some traditional and some original compositions by the four band members – 'Mazurka d'Artense', 'Bubbles in la Bourboule', 'La Ballade des Ours', 'Sous le Clair de Lune' – or by other musicians from Leitrim, such as Charlie Lennon and Joe Liddy, the county’s famous fiddler, or O’Carolan with 'Sí Bheag Sí Mór'.
The band’s originality also lies in their rich musical blend with Celtic influences, punctuated by subtle nuances drawn from classical music, jazz and African rhythms. Drawing inspiration from both the western counties and the Auvergne, the four members of Cas weave together catchy melodies and rhythms, creating a soundscape that is both spellbinding and energetic.
As a nod to Auvergne, the photo on the back of the cover shows the Château de Val in the Cantal.
A band with real drive, for whom one can only wish every success.
