CARLOS - SWEENEY - McCARTIN
The One After It
Philippe Cousin
A debut album in 2019 for these three musicians from the Irish north-west. Dylan Carlos (fiddle) comes from a family of musicians in County Roscommon, Cein Sweeney (flute) is from County Cavan and John McCartin (guitar) is from Leitrim.
And it was precisely in this county, in Carrick-on-Shannon to be precise, that they met during a session in a local pub. They quickly hit it off, and a few months later recorded their first album.
It was another five years before they graced us with a second opus, simply entitled The One After It. Five years may seem a long time, but it has to be said that we're dealing with three amateur musicians who all have a profession: Cein is a schoolteacher, Dylan is a chemical engineer and John runs a business. But music can be an all-consuming passion, and all three have been immersed in it since childhood.
For them, there's no question of seeking inspiration in one part of the country or another. Being from the North-West, it's the music of this region that they interpret, following in the footsteps of their masters, Charlie Lennon and Joe Liddy, also natives of Leitrim. This particularly rich music has also nourished the repertoires of such famous bands as Lúnasa and Dervish, to which our trio lays claim.
The band performs traditional jigs, reels and slip jigs, and nothing else. In the course of the various tracks, you'll recognize some very popular tunes: The Rolling Wave/ The Lark on the Strand, The Windy City, The Swaggering Jig, Coleman's Cross, The Humours of Castlefin or The Limerick Lasses.
A second album in perfect continuity with the previous one, with a similar repertoire. And even the cover shows a clear analogy with the first opus. The three musicians pose in front of a pub, this time Matt Molloy's in Wesport.
Two special guests are Dónal Lunny (bouzouki and bodhrán) and Dave Sheridan (keyboards).
An album in the purest Irish tradition, energetic and sometimes unbridled. From the first note to the last, there's only one word: excellent.
