After releasing three albums during the first decade of the 2000s, the quartet waited more than 10 years before treating us to a fourth album, 'Foscadh ón mbáisteach – A shelter from the rain'. This album features a wide variety of traditional reels and jigs, some of which are taken from the famous collection of Irish melodies compiled by Francis O’Neill, Chief of Police in Chicago at the dawn of the 20th century.

The mission set by the members of Bua was to revive the golden age of Irish music in Chicago, not out of mere nostalgia, but to introduce as many people as possible to the richness of the Irish tradition that the emigrants had brought with them.
In terms of instrumentation, Bua has always prioritised quality, striving to achieve the highest musical standards, blending Seán Gavin’s rich flute and uilleann pipes playing with that of the inspired fiddler Devin Shepherd, accompanied by Brian Miller’s energetic guitar and bouzouki and Brian Ó hAirt’s vibrant concertina. The latter brings undeniable talent as a performer to the five songs featured here, in both Irish and English. For Brian is fluent in Irish and has studied the ancient traditions of Irish song, thereby paying tribute to the masters of years gone by.

Throughout the album, Bua’s ensemble work offers numerous instrumental highlights. These include, to name but a few, ‘Nóra Críonna/Páidín Ó Raifeartaigh’ and ‘Maid in the Cherry Tree/Sandymount’, which come straight to us from Sligo and Dublin. And Brian’s melodious voice adds a subtle touch – the icing on the cake.
'A Shelter from the Rain' is undoubtedly one of those hidden gems that bring the listener pleasure and serenity. Bua explores the as yet uncharted horizons of Irish tradition.
