BREAKING TRAD
Drive
Philippe Cousin
The trio Breaking Trad is yet another Irish group, blending traditional music with a touch of freshness and modernity, and the musicians who make up the trio are far from unknowns on the Irish scene.
Dónal Murphy, on accordion and melodeon, is best known for his work with the band Four Men and a Dog, with whom he has recorded several albums. After trying his hand at tin whistle at the age of 8, he quickly turned to the instrument played by his own father. Originally from County Limerick, he has always felt a deep attachment to the music of his home town of Abbeyfeale and to the style of Sliabh Luachra, a region on the borders of three south-western counties (Cork, Kerry and Limerick). He has already produced two solo albums, in 2009 and 2022.
The second member of the group is fiddler David Doocey, an Irish-American who has returned to his homeland and has two albums to his name, one solo in 2013 and the other with Cillian Vallely in 2024.
Finally, Mike Galvin, guitarist and singer, who has collaborated with numerous musicians in a wide range of musical styles, from rock to trad.
This is not their first time together, having released an album ten years ago. Their music has been described by the Irish press as dazzling, unique and spirited.
Now they're back with Drive, a suite of eleven tracks and no fewer than twenty-seven tunes. Reels, jigs, waltzes, as well as polkas and slides, two popular dances in this region. There are also a number of Irish standards: Bucket of Berries, Mist Covered Mountain, The Rainy Day and Merry Sisters of Fate. Finally, two famous songs, Leaving of Liverpool and Boolavogue, round off this collection of lively tunes.
