ALLT
Vol.II -Cuimhne
Philippe Cousin
Six years ago the album Allt was released, recorded by Scottish singer and musician Julie Fowlis and Irish fiddler and singer Zoë Conway, themselves accompanied by their respective husbands, Éamon Doorley and John McIntyre. Since then, the quartet has continued to collaborate from time to time.
Allt having become the band's name in the meantime, they are back with a second album entitled Cuimhne, which means ‘Memory’ in Gaelic. A superb collection of songs, including one, Lá Róúil, written by Zoë and Irish and Scottish tunes composed by these four friends.
A fitting title in this case, with the quartet drawing on memories of Gaelic tradition, reworking them to give them a more contemporary edge.
The album, which was recorded in a single take to give it a natural feel, is the culmination of a composition project inspired by old and more recent poetry, all in Gaelic. A project that sensitively links the words and music of their two homelands, highlighting the ancestral musical link between Ireland and Scotland.
Poetry being a means of artistic expression in Gaelic culture, the Allt quartet have created melodies that bring an emotional dimension to the texts of this elegant album.
Using acoustic instruments such as the whistle, fiddle, bouzouki, guitar and piano, the four musicians bring the emotional power of these two closely related languages to life. An album that takes us on a journey through the shared heritage of these two Celtic countries.
Dónal Lunny, on bouzouki and bodhrán, adds a measured rhythmic touch.
Cuimhne reflects the richness and immense beauty of two cultures so close.
