ADRIENNE O'SHEA
Threads of Gold
Philippe Cousin
Born in Dublin into a family deeply involved in Irish music, Adrienne O'Shea emigrated with her parents to the USA at a very early age, and more specifically to the northern state of Minnesota.
Like so many other Irish emigrants, she studied music, dance and the Irish language from an early age, winning a number of prizes. At the age of 9 she performed on stage for the first time. And to round off her career and anchor herself in her roots, she holds a master's degree in traditional music from the University of Limerick.
Threads of Gold is the debut album from Adrienne, a singer with a clear, expressive voice, not unlike that of Karan Casey at times, which enhances the delicacy and complexity of the eleven traditional songs she offers us here.
She has enlisted the services of several Irish-American musicians. These include Dáithí Sproule, guitarist with the supergroup Altan, who accompanies her on a song in Irish, and Brian Miller from the group Bua on guitar and bouzouki. These two musicians also collaborated with Adrienne on the arrangements for the album. Other musicians on the album include Danny Diamond on fiddle, Cormac Ó Sé on accordion and Norah Rendell on vocal harmonies.
The album opens with Lady Diamond, a joyous children's ballad, followed by the superb Barbara Allen, written by Jean Ritchie. There is also Black Eyed Susan, an English ballad collected in the Appalachians, and The House Carpenter, another seventeenth-century children's ballad. And one of the most beautiful tracks, Inis Dhún Rámha, a song learnt from Dáithí Sproule and taken from the repertoire of the legendary group Skara Brae.
This is a very young artist who will be one to watch closely as her talent continues to explode.
